The Significance of Serum Prolactin Levels in Children with Seizure Disorders

Abstract
Prolactin secretion after generalized after generalized seizures (38 patients), complex partial seizures (7) and febrile convulsions (14) was studied in a group of children aged between 2 months and 13 years.
In these studies, seizure classification was made from the observer's descriptions. Serum Seum prolactin levels were determined within 1 hour after the control of seizure attacks .
Out of 38 generalized seizure cases, 37 were followed by a significant increase in prolactin concentration (mean, male 36.0¡¾18.6ng/ml, female 34.5¡¾13.7ng/ml ; range 9.2 to 110ng/ml) compared with febrrile convulsions (mean, male 20.5¡¾7.9ng/ml,
female
13.7¡¾5.5ng/ml ; range, 6.5 to 34.1ng/ml)
The data indicated that serum prolactin levels rise after generalized seizures and thus, measurement of the postictal prolactin levels can help identify the generalized seizures.
